About

Grant

My background is in depth psychology, mindfulness, trauma work and transcendental meditation. I combine these disciplines to provide a psychotherapy that is transpersonal, integral, trauma sensitive and psychodynamic. I weave spirituality into my therapy and see mindfulness meditation as the backbone to human mental health. Not only will mindfulness foster a continued state of mental and emotional wellbeing, it will also inevitably cause insight into the ultimate nature of reality which I refer to as nonduality.

I am a published writer and author of The Creative-Numinous Approach to Depression and Art Therapy: Healing through Creative Spirituality. I synthesized this theoretical and practical approach for depressed individuals in order to help offset the dull, meaningless and repetitive cycles of modern life with the awakening of the latent creative potential within each human being.

When the mind ceases to create suffering, that same creative potential is now free to create anything.

Credentials

I am a registered Associate Professional Clinical Counselor (APCC). I work in group practice under the supervision of Joshua Wyner at Wyner Family Counseling. I graduated with my Masters in Arts (MA) from Pacifica Graduate Institute in Counseling Psychology. I have been providing therapy to individuals for 5 years now.

01.

In art therapy, we get together and make art. The art you create is a way for you to express emotions and thoughts that would be difficult to express otherwise. I also see creativity as a way of tapping into your inner spiritual connection to the creator itself.

Play therapy is another way to enter into the flow state and access the inner child. Play therapy is also the most effective way that I know of to work with children since it is how they communciate.

02.

Nonduality is the experiential realization of oneness. That there is only a illusory sense of a "self" that is created by successive mental and physical phenomena.

Grant can teach you how to see through this illusion of separation and does nondual therapy or coaching with you, helping to point out where duality still has you fooled.

Watch the "Nonduality" video by clicking the button below for a free teaching on the true nature of reality. It turns out that its less about doing and trying, and more about letting go, releasing efforts to control experience and this state is more natural and spontaneous than you would expect.

03.

Depth psychology is the branch of psychology that focuses on the unconscious and how it influences our conscious experience.

We are going to be talking about your dreams, interacting with your visions, daydreaming, free associating and using the imagination to explore the parts of you that you never knew existed.

Internal Family Systems (IFS) is the way that Grant will mainly help organize different parts of your psyche. The goal here is to integrate all the parts of the psyche into a functional whole.

About Sessions

I work spontaneously and will usually adapt to how you are currently showing up in session. I can dive deep with you into the darkest most unknown and unconscious shadow aspects of your experience. I can also stay on the surface, talk about your week or enter the abstract mind and use symbolism, metaphors and discuss existential or spiritual truths. I tend to be good at helping those who have nightmares, PTSD and those who struggle to understand or integrate an NDE or other intense spiritual experiences. For experienced meditators or artists who are struggling to ground themselves or function in the material world, I can focus therapy on helping develop more stability and control in the mind and body. If meditation or enlightenment is what interests you, our sessions can be used to check in about intensive meditative practice, tune up your meditation, or learn how to meditate in different ways.

Therapy with me is a shame free space where anything and everything is seen through the light of acceptance, empathy and understanding. I don't label one behavior as wrong, or bad and the other as good or right. I see the world in many shades and colors and not in absolutes. I am a nondualist by heart and know from experience that black and white dualistic thinking prevents the development of higher consciousness and decreases mental and emotional well being. If a behavior or pattern is causing you to suffer than I would help you create new patterns and new behaviors to replace the old ones that no longer serve you, not because I believe certain behaviors are objectively right or wrong.

The mind is a powerful tool and if not used correctly, can cause immense internal suffering. In sessions with me you will learn how to use the mind correctly. The art of mindfulness meditation is the single most powerful therapeutic skill that one can learn and practice, yielding results instantaneously. The skill however only yields continuous results if used continuously. Mindfulness during a seated meditation session or therapy session is not enough, mindfulness must be brought with you during all of your daily activities, moment by moment, if lasting results are desired.

Every session with me is an opportunity to check in with your emotions, mind and body and slow down the automatic processes that have got you trapped in the mental and behavioral cycles that caused you to seek therapy in the first place.

We are all practicing something, every day, every moment.
It is just a matter of what we are practicing and how that effects our mental health.

Three Sources of Suffering:

1. Desire
2. Avoidance
3. Ignorance

How to Reduce Each:

1. Practice gratitude for what you currently have, where you currently are and who you are currently with.
2. Take the necessary steps, and endure the temporary discomfort associated with working towards creating a more comfortable and pleasurable lifestyle.
3.Practice mindfulness of sensations as they occur in real time.
